The town of Pontevedra Capiz in 1853 at the present site of Barangay Sublangon. Formerly the town was a part of Panay, being the first settlement in the Province of Capiz.
Three
years after the town leaders decided to transfer the poblacion to its
present site because of the accessibility to the mouth and the big and
navigable Agbalo River. When General Crespo passed a decree making it
an independent town from Panay only in the year 1853. "CAGUYUMAN" a term descriptive of the Place of "Ants" or "Ant Hill", the native of the town call that place. This had been because during that time the market days of the town attracted to a very large number of people from the neighboring town and far way places. This people came to town like swarms of ants, on foot, bullcarts in bancas and sailboats. Hence, the name was "CAGUYUMAN". The name was changed to PONTEVEDRA, when the town has its own independent parish. After the town was established through the request of General Moriones, that was 24 years later. The request was granted 2 years after and Father Gregorio Hermida was the first Spanish Friar found the striking resemblance of the town with that of his hometown in Pontevedra. Henceforth through his influence the town was named "PONTEVEDRA". When you are in Pontevedra, you may groove to the beats as Guyum Tribes do the streetdance as they celebrated the Guyum-Guyuman Festival every month of May.
